Ideas for a Different Valentine’s Day

When someone mentions Valentine’s Day, hearts, chocolate, and flowers quickly come to mind.  The typical Valentine’s date consists of a romantic dinner at a romantic restaurant with your romantic partner, and occasionally, a romantic movie is thrown in the mix.  Blah, blah, blah.  If that’s the date you were planning, STOP.  Don’t be typical this year!  Be adventurous!  Do something different!  Not sure what to do now?  Here are some suggestions to shake up your Valentine’s Day…

Do Dinner Differently…

My husband and I have several different restaurants we like to visit.  Some we love for their decadent desserts, and others for their amazing appetizers.  So, instead of visiting just one restaurant this Valentine’s Day, make a night of it and hit all of your favorite places.  Have your appetizers at one eatery, your main course at another, and then pick your favorite place for dessert and go there!  Restaurant hopping gives you so much more variety and allows you really enjoy each course.  Think about visiting different kinds of restaurants all in one night: start at Bluegill on the Causeway for their Famous Flaming Oysters, then head over to Master Joe’s in Downtown Fairhope for their incredible sushi, and end the night at Pinzone’s - also in Downtown Fairhope - for some delicious cookies and cream cannoli!  It’s an adventure for your taste buds!  You will never do Valentine’s dinner the same way again!

Skip the romantic dinner…

…And go play laser tag!  Or bowling!  Or whatever it is you’re in to.  Nothing says “I love you” like shooting people (or your significant other) with lasers.  I’m a huge fan of Eastern Shore Lanes and their laser tag arena.  It’s an incredibly fun and exhilarating spot, and I personally love kicking my husband’s behind at laser tag.  You could also team up with your partner and out-play other couples, making you the coolest couple ever.  And afterwards, you can hit up the arcade for some games, and maybe even win your lovely a prize.  It’s the perfect date for the competitive couple.

Take a hike. Literally.

Spend some quality time in nature with your significant other without the usual, everyday distractions of life.  Added bonus: you get some pretty great exercise!  Hiking in the quiet of the woods also presents the perfect opportunity to engage in conversation with your date, which we all know is crucial to a good relationship.  Blakeley State Park offers almost 11 miles of amazing hiking trails, with incredible views of Mobile Bay from the boardwalk.  If one or both of you have never been to this park, it will be an amazing, new experience you can share together.  Or if you’re not so much the “hiking” type, take a stroll instead down Scenic 98 in Downtown Fairhope on the water and catch some beautiful sunset views over Mobile Bay.  Talk about romantic!

Valentine’s Gras…

This year, mix up your Valentine’s Day love and Mardi Gras revelry on February 14th by celebrating at the parades!  Head down to Fairhope for the Krewe of Mullet Mates parade at 2pm, and while you’re there, have your lover take you for the best chocolate in town at the Frenchman’s Corner in the French Quarter.  Then head up to Daphne for the Shadow Barons parade at 6:45pm, and afterwards, have some terrific pizza at Cousin Vinny’s.  Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Have a Phone-Free Day…

Put your phones and tablets away and talk to one another!  Facebook can wait until tomorrow.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be the same old thing every year.  Do something that’s out of the box, something new, something different.  Put a new spin on an old tradition and create some new traditions of your own.  The most important thing to remember is that Valentine’s Day is about being with the one you love and showing them how much they mean to you.  Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
