Personally, the thought of swimming a third of a mile in Mobile Bay, riding my bike another 18 miles, THEN running 3.1 miles through the City of Fairhope terrifies me! But to the almost 600 participants in the 2013 Grandman event and so many more that will embark on this year’s race on May 31st, THIS is their “happy place.”
A triathlon is no doubt something that an athlete yearns to do. Taking part in this multi-stage competitive sport is growing year by year. Having said to have begun in the early 1900’s in France, the United States is now home to arguably the most popular triathlon event in the world - the Ironman - held each October in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Smaller, still grueling, regional competitions take place all over the world.
Locally, the 10th Anniversary 2014 Grandman Triathlon will no doubt bring plenty of athleticism to the Pier, Bayfront and the streets of Downtown Fairhope! As we watch men, women and children from all over the south pace themselves during this great event, we’ll watch the proceeds benefit three local, non-profit organizations as well: Mobile Baykeeper, The Gulf Coast Area Triathletes, and Camp Rap-A-Hope.
Make a point to cheer on all these amazing triathletes in their “happy place!” Join them at the 7:00am race start time on Saturday, May 31, and watch us here at Eastern Shore AL for a spotlight or two on racers, past and present. On your mark, get set…comments powered by Disqus
